What We Do

Building Confidence | Developing Skills | Having Fun

Tanoshii Judo (meaning 'Fun' Judo) is a community sports club set up in 2017.

We are based in Edinburgh and have classes for a whole range of ages and abilities.

All of our Judo classes are designed to improve physical literacy as well as instill the ethos of Judo - honesty, humility, respect and hard work whilst, of course, having FUN!

What is Judo?

Judo, meaning “the gentle way” is a Japanese martial art created by Jigoro Kano in 1882. It is the most widely practiced martial art in the world, and second most practiced sport globally, behind football.

Judo was derived from the techniques of jujitsu as a less violent form of self defence and has since developed into the Olympics’ most diverse sport.

Judo is a sport that caters to all ages, sizes and athletic abilities. Jigoro Kano developed techniques based on the principle of “minimum effort, maximum efficiency”.

The Judo Moral Code:

Courage - Courtesy - Friendship - Honesty - Honour - Modesty - Respect - Self-Control

Judo is a sport built on a moral code. Tanoshii Judo seeks to instil values, such as discipline and respect in order to develop their members not only physically, but as well rounded individuals. To find out more about judo and its values, please see the links on our websites footer.
